Cate West Zahl
30” x 40”
Oil on canvas
2022
Cate West Zahl’s academic training was based in the technical ability of life, a strong foundation from where she explores more explicit abstraction. Her work strikes a balance between control and abandon, with her process intentionally left bare. It’s no accident that the results are reminiscent of Richard Diebenkrorn, whom Zahl cites as an influence.
Her new work documents the cyclical changing of the seasons, focusing on horizon lines and flattened planes seen from a bird’s eye view. Where new layers of growth, dying plants, wild seeds and flowers emerge from the earth, Zahl takes pleasure in highlighting the patchwork divisions they create.
Zahl exhibits her work throughout Virginia and Washington, D.C., most recently at the Taubman Museum of Art. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of hotels and corporations across the country, as well in private collections from San Francisco to New York City. She lives and paints in Charlottesville, Virginia.
