Mixed Materials, Oil on cotton rag paper
Justin Giunta's work combines traditional concepts with unconventional materials for a style that is uniquely subversive. Yellow plastic replaces gold leaf and gilding. White-out, highlighter, and carbon paper are infused between transparent layers of glaze akin to the traditions of Dutch Baroque painting. The presented works on paper are studies for larger works on canvas, each exploring new colors, flowers, and motion filled compositions that break the subject from their stayed decorative context.
Giunta, formerly the jewelry design director at Tory Burch and India Hicks, inc., has exhibited his work in solo and group shows in New York, Paris, Charleston, Miami, and now Birmingham.
